Stromberg plum is protected designation of origin (PDO)

Only Stromberg plums are allowed to be called that: the European Commission added the plum to the list of protected designations of origin (PDO) on 08.11.2013.

The label confirms that the production, processing and manufacture of a product in a specific geographical area is carried out according to a recognised and defined procedure.

The Stromberger Pflaume is a very old, medium-late variety of plum grown in Oelde-Stromberg in the Münsterländer Bucht. It has a characteristic mildly aromatic flavour, has a low water content and does not produce any bitter substances.

The Stromberg plum (PDO) is now one of the more than 1,100 products already protected under the EU's agricultural product quality policy.

Three EU quality marks exist: g. U. (protected designation of origin), PGI (protected geographical indication) and TSG (traditional speciality guaranteed). S. (traditional speciality guaranteed).

The purpose of these quality marks is to promote the diversification of agricultural production, to protect product names against misuse and imitation and to inform consumers about the specific characteristics of the products. The quality marks have the following meanings:

  • Protected Designation of Origin - PDO. U.:Production, processing and manufacture of a product in a specified geographical area according to a recognised and defined method;
  • protected geographical indication - PGI:Close connection of agricultural products and foodstuffs with the region of origin. At least one of the production stages - i.e. production, processing or manufacture - is carried out in the region of origin;
  • Traditional speciality guaranteed - g. t. S.:traditional composition of the product or traditional method of production and/or processing.
